Overview (English)
An AI-native code editor built as a fork of VS Code, so your existing extensions and keybindings carry over. Its distinguishing feature is repository-wide indexing: it understands how files relate across a project rather than only the file you have open, which makes multi-file refactors and "where is this defined" questions work properly.
Our take (English)
The most balanced coding tool overall, and the one I would recommend first to most developers.
Where it wins: repo-wide context. Asking it to rename a concept across twelve files, or to trace why a build is failing, is where the indexing pays off and where chat-window assistants fall down. The VS Code base means near-zero migration cost.
Where to be careful: it is a subscription on top of your model costs, and the agent mode can be over-eager — it will happily make changes you did not ask for, so keep the diff view open. Very large monorepos can get sluggish.
Verdict: the default recommendation for day-to-day development. If you prefer the terminal, Claude Code or Codex are stronger there; if you want maximum control over which model you use, an open-source agent is the better fit.
